Reviews

My boy doesn't realize it isnt a treat

"My pup Nova loves Smack. He impatiently watches as I weigh and serve his meals in his slow-feeder bowl (which has suddenly become necessary again). While Smack is more expensive than his previous food, there are few options if you prefer a product free of synthetic vitamins. Both Nova and I are very satisfied."

Yum indeed

"My dog and all her friends lap up the smack food with joy. Her friend all have various eating issues but none when they visit here and eat her food and take home doggie bags. After have two other dogs with gi allergies and food aversions it is a pleasure to see a dog smile while eating. The love in her face"

Thumbs Up for Picky Eaters

"I have an incredibly picky wolf hybrid, and with Smack we FINALLY found something that he devours! Highly recommend to anyone with picky eaters who also have sensitive stomachs. The ingredients are second to none, and this is clearly of the utmost quality."

Worth the price!

"My dog is very picky. He won’t even eat fresh dog food. If I find something he likes, he will tire of it after a few days but so far he’s still eating his Smack and it’s been a few weeks."

Suzanne C. (5/5)

My dogs LOVED the food but…

"It gave them explosive, projectile poops…. They loved everything about the food. Super picky eaters. But when both wound up with upset stomachs and long bouts of hunched over pooping… we are back to square one with finding a new food."

Abbey F. (3/5)

My pups love their Smack

"My pups love their Smack and have been thriving on it. My 14yo Anatolian is going strong!"

Christina O. (5/5)

My pups really like the

"My pups really like the pork! And I really like how the pieces are bigger and easy to break up for treats for training! The pork is my go to whenever I purchase smack."

Amber B. (5/5)

He loves it and looks

"He loves it and looks forward to his morning and evening feeding. I don't have to worry that he is not eating enough. I add a few pieces of sweet potato, carrot, pepper, lettuce(crunchy part) or cauliflower with his smack. He is maintaining his weight and not over weight with a belly."

Q&A

I buy Salmon Smack as a food topper and as a training treat for 2 standard poodles. It was most economical to purchase the big box size. Should this be frozen in zip bags to preserve freshness? Or will original bag and closed to the air be sufficient. I’m unsure how long it will keep fresh. They are really loving it as a treat and a bit if extra in their ACANA Pacifica/Ooen Farm ancient grain mixture.
Hi Julie, Unopened bags will have an 18 month shelf life, with a best before date stamped on every bag we produce. Once opened, Smack will generally stay fresh for up to 3 months if left in a cool dry place. We encourage keeping the Smack out of sunlight or direct sources of heat as that can cause the food to oxidize. If you know your pet won't eat all of the Smack within 3 months, you can absolutely freeze some to retain freshness further!
How much would you feed two-year-old great Pyrenees with hep dysplasia what measurement would be healthy for her a day?
Hello Angie, we would suggest reaching out to your trusted vet or holistic vet to see if Smack would be suitable for the individual needs of your dog. It is worth mentioning our feeding guidelines are based on your dog's whether they are a puppy or adult, current weight, along with their activity levels. Regular weighing will help you monitor a healthy weight, and you can always adjust as you go.
I am trying to calculate amount of calories for my dog per day. Based on your information Harvest pork have a 460 kcal per 1 cup. Does it mean that there is 460,000 cal in 1 cup?
Hello Renata, Kcal and calories are terms used interchangeably in nutrition. The calculated calorie content indicates there is 460 kcal per cup, 1 cup being equivalent to 100gr.
Pure Pharmacy in BC sell the 2.5 kg Pork dog food for 159.99, it’s not a good deal if you compare it to you guys website of 139
Hi Jake, we leave it up to retailers offer competitive pricing; that said, we will take your feedback into consideration.
I have three dogs. The little one is about 12 lbs the next one is about 50 lbs and is very active. The last one is not as active and is about 130 lbs based on this how many bags a week would I go through. I have been feeding raw, however the prices are outrageous.
Hi Christy, for feeding your three dogs, you'll need between 675gr to 700gr a day. Please feel free to contact us at customercare@smackpetfood.com with any questions or comments.

Frequently asked questions

What is Prairie Harvest Pork made with?

Prairie Harvest Pork is made with Manitoba pork as the main protein source, including nutrient-rich pork liver, pork heart, pork bone, and pork kidneys to create a whole-prey-style nutrition profile. Smack lists the recipe as 80% Manitoba pork and 20% certified organic, GMO-free fruits and vegetables, along with functional ingredients like inactive nutritional yeast (dried yeast), sea salt, and tocopherols for preservation. This combination is designed to deliver a highly nutrient-dense, meat-forward formula that supports overall canine health.

Is Prairie Harvest Pork grain-free?

Yes. Smack clearly states that Prairie Harvest Pork is a grain-free dog food with no fillers, gluten, wheat, or synthetic vitamins. This makes it suitable for pet owners looking to avoid grain-based diets or reduce common carbohydrate fillers. The grain-free formulation is also intended to support dogs with specific dietary sensitivities or those on limited-ingredient feeding plans.

What makes Prairie Harvest Pork different from Chunky Chicken?

Prairie Harvest Pork and Chunky Chicken differ primarily in their protein base and nutritional profile. Prairie Harvest Pork uses pork as its main ingredient, while Chunky Chicken is built around Manitoba chicken. Additionally, Prairie Harvest Pork has a higher fat and energy density profile, with a guaranteed analysis of 48% minimum crude protein and 22% minimum crude fat, making it more calorie-rich compared to the chicken-based formula. These differences allow owners to choose based on protein preference, activity level, and dietary needs.

What fruits and vegetables are included in Prairie Harvest Pork?

The recipe includes a wide range of nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables such as pumpkin, kale, apple, blueberry, cranberry, kelp, celery, shiitake mushroom, turmeric, and thyme. These ingredients provide natural antioxidants, fiber, and phytonutrients that complement the pork-based protein foundation. Together, they help support digestion, immune health, and overall nutritional balance.

Is Prairie Harvest Pork formulated for all life stages?

Yes. Smack states that Prairie Harvest Pork is formulated to meet AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for all life stages, including growth in large-breed dogs. This means it is designed to provide complete and balanced nutrition for puppies, adult dogs, and seniors when fed according to guidelines. Its nutrient profile supports long-term feeding without requiring additional supplementation in normal conditions.

How many calories are in Prairie Harvest Pork?

Smack lists Prairie Harvest Pork at approximately 4600 kcal/kg and 460 kcal/cup, making it a relatively calorie-dense dog food. Because of this high energy content, portion control is important, especially for less active or weight-conscious dogs. Owners should adjust serving sizes based on age, breed, activity level, and body condition to maintain a healthy weight.

Can Prairie Harvest Pork be softened before feeding?

Yes. Smack feeding guidelines state that Prairie Harvest Pork can be served dry or softened by adding one part warm water and allowing it to soak before serving. This can improve texture and aroma, making it easier for puppies, senior dogs, or dogs with dental sensitivity to eat comfortably.

What sizes does Prairie Harvest Pork come in?

The product is available in multiple sizes, including 8.8 oz/250 g, 3.3 lb/1.5 kg, and 5.5 lb/2.5 kg bags. These options allow owners to try the recipe in small quantities or purchase larger bags for long-term feeding. Availability may vary, so it’s recommended to check the live product page before ordering.

Can Prairie Harvest Pork be used as dog food for sensitive stomach and skin issues?

Yes, it may be used as a dog food option for sensitive stomachs and skin concerns due to its limited protein base and absence of grains and fillers. Pork can serve as an alternative protein for dogs that do not tolerate chicken or fish well. Like all of our recipes, Prairie Harvest Pork also contains pumpkin, which aids in digestibility and can be great for dogs with sensitive stomachs. However, every dog responds differently, so a gradual transition and close monitoring of digestion, stool quality, and skin condition are recommended.

Can you give your dog raw pork?

No, dogs should not be fed raw pork. Raw or undercooked pork can carry harmful bacteria and parasites, including Trichinella, which may cause serious infections in both dogs and humans. For safety, pork should always be thoroughly cooked before being fed to dogs, ensuring it is free from harmful pathogens and safe for consumption.

Smack’s dehydration process ensures the pork is safe in two ways. First, dehydration reduces the moisture and water activity to levels that inhibit the survival and growth of harmful bacteria and pathogens. Second, Smack’s process includes a gentle time-and-temperature treatment that briefly raises the temperature to help ensure the product is free from harmful bacteria and pathogens.
