"A very picky 18 year old Yorkie, is finally eating and gaining weight. I honestly believe this has and will continue to extend his life. He used to have stomach issues and nothing stayed in him. Tiny pieces

"The salmon fusion arrived ok but it is all in very small pieces. Rarely is a bit bigger size. At the most about 1 inch. I have had the pork before and the pieces were a nice size. Is it supposed to be this small. Really tiny pieces."

Best price I've found for this high quality type of dog food

"Absolutely excellent dog food! It's not cheap, but when is cheap ever good? I learned that lesson a long time ago with my Great Dane who passed away a month before he turned eight. He died of cancer because we fed him kibble. I'm grateful I can afford to feed my dogs much better food now that I know how important it is. My dachshund lived to 17 and my new Mini Doxie only weighs 8. 5 pounds so he eats only the best!"

Addictive for my dogs

"I was originally given 2 sample size bags of this food from Global Pet Foods. They liked the chicken one but went crazy for the salmon. It is what we use as the high value treat for training now. They will obey commands almost 100% of the time for a taste of salmon. I like that it is not rock hard, like a lot of dry foods. It is easy to break up into bite sized pieces, and my old dog that has few teeth can still chew it. Also one of the best factors is that it has good quality ingredients, and it is a fully Canadian company. It is a bit on the expensive side, but my dogs are worth it."

"I had received a sample of smack food. It had wonderful ingredients like turkey tail in it. I ordered a bag without looking at the ingredients, but the ingredients have changed. It still appears to be a good food, but not the level that I thought it was."

Good healthy oils

"Our dog decided recently that she prefers the lamb to the salmon, but I put homemade chicken broth on it and then she eats it, but she’ll eat the lamb dry. She’s on medication that has affected her appetite, so not a good test of this food. It’s good quality with good oils, so I like feeding it to her."

Not the Same

"Hello. I bought a 14 oz bag of Smack Caribbean-Salmon from my pet food store. Once my yorkie got used to it, she loved it. I ordered the 5. 5 lb bag directly from Smack and it is not the same. It is very dry and not as vibrant in color. I am thinking it may be old. My yorkie doesn't like it as well. She devoured the first bag from the pet store, but I have to add bits of other things so she will eat from this big bag that I purchased. I wish that I had not purchased such a large bag, but I was encouraged that my dog loved it so much the first time and didn't seem to be allergic to it."

Hi, we're looking to switch our 6yo JRT off "kibble". Hoping that will keep her healthy and strong forever :) I just came across your food at my local Bosley's and wondering if you can speak to how your food is made such that it retains it's crunch but doesn't carry all the potentially harmful AGEs of kibble. Love your price point, love your fish recipe (we live in BC) and love that you're a Canadian home brand. Just want to better understand if I'm truely avoiding AGEs even with your "low temp" kibble. Hi Agata, Great question! Agata, not to worry about AGEs with a product like Smack. We use a low-temperature dehydration process. Smack has a jerky-like texture and can be easily broken by hand. The only thing it would have in common with kibble is the convenience aspects. We never use high heat, which keeps the product as close to its raw form while ensuring all pathogens and harmful bacteria are eliminated. I thought that were all allergic to peppermint. Why is it in your ingredients list?
This is such a great question to ask, Julie! The primary concern from peppermint stems from heavily concentrated oils or extracts - both of which is entirely excluded from our recipes. Instead, we use miniscule quantities of Organic, fresh Peppermint in our foods for the vitamins, minerals and health benefits that they provide. Peppermint is a popular natural remedy used to ease indigestion and can help immensely with gas, diarrhea and IBS. Peppermint also contains essential vitamins and minerals like Vitamin C, Potassium, Manganese and fiber! We have been producing pet food for 19 years and have never had any issues with pets consuming the peppermint included in our formulas. We have put a lot of thought, care and research into our recipes and are extremely confident in them, with each unique ingredient playing a part in the overall recipe!

Hi there, I am interested in switching my dog over to this food because of the excellent ingredient list, however I am slightly concerned about the high protein percentage. My dog seems to be sensitive to chicken but has no other health issues. She is currently on a salmon-based kibble. Are you able to provide some information/resources regarding the safety of high protein foods? From my understanding, the ideal dry matter percentage for protein in between 15 to 30 percent. Thank you for your message, Emma! Smack formulas are based off of Biologically Appropriate Raw Feeding diets, developed by Dr. Ian Billinghurst as the most appropriate way to feed raw food. A pretty common metric for raw diets, in general, in terms of protein: fat balance will sit at 2:1 in terms of calories received. While our protein percentages may appear to be higher, it's important to note that these are listed per 1kg of food fed. With a dehydrated raw, nutrient dense food like ours that is entirely free of fillers, pets will eat considerable less compared to other brands or styles of food which require eating more to receive the same nutrition.
